IPMA raises to 17 districts under yellow warning due to heat

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) today raised from 14 to 17 the number of districts under yellow warning due to heat, until 9:00 PM, with only Viana do Castelo being the exception. In the update made in the early afternoon, IPMA added the districts of Porto, Aveiro and Braga to the initial 14 districts.

The districts initially under yellow warning were Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Lisboa, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Coimbra and Portalegre.

In Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga, IPMA alerts for the occurrence of thunderstorm, heavy rainfall and wind gusts between 70 and 90 kilometres per hour. In the remaining districts, the warnings are for elevated maximum temperature values and cover Évora, Faro, Setúbal, Santarém, Lisboa, Beja and Portalegre.

The yellow warning is the least severe in a three-level scale and is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.
