Covilhã: the municipality with the largest burned area between 2020 and 2025

The municipality of Covilhã recorded the largest burned area in Portugal between 2020 and 2025, with 28.8 thousand hectares, according to data from the National Statistics Institute. INE analyzed the territorial exposure to rural fire hazard, identifying that the ten municipalities with the largest burned area are located in the North and Central regions, which together concentrated 90.7% of the total burned area. The study also revealed that 31% of the 50,218 fires recorded in the period started in areas of high and very high hazard, and that 69.6% of the territories classified as high hazard were more than 15 minutes away from a fire brigade, with Góis and Pampilhosa da Serra standing out with more than 80% of their surface area in this condition.

Seia is again the capital of Environmental Cinema with the 32nd Edition of CineEco

The 32nd edition of CineEco – International Environmental Film Festival of Serra da Estrela takes place from October 9 to 17 in Seia, featuring 87 films from 34 countries, of which 410 were submitted for competition. The International Feature Film Selection presents 10 world premieres in Portugal, coming from festivals such as Cannes, Sundance, and CPH:DOX, covering themes such as economic models, environmental activism, and climate migrations. The festival includes six main competitions, a short and medium-length film competition with 31 works, and the Regional Panorama Competition dedicated to Serra da Estrela. Also noteworthy is the special screening of "Lições de Fogo" (Lessons of Fire), a Finnish documentary filmed in Castelo Branco and Seia, about fires in Portugal. The festival, which has been held continuously since 1995, has the High Patronage of the President of the Republic and the United Nations Environment Programme.
