Chestnut producers from the village of Cova de Lua, in Bragança, are denouncing significant losses caused by deer, which destroyed more than 100 chestnut trees. The farmers report that the damage is recurring and that they tried, without success, to obtain support from the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment. The legislation assigns the responsibility for compensation to the parish councils, but they claim not to have budget, and the producers criticize the bureaucratic process that leads many to give up on requesting compensation. The situation is aggravated by the fact that many damaged trees were only two or three years old and were already producing husks, and by the limited authorization for culling deer granted by ICNF.
