The Portuguese Environment Agency discourages swimming at 13 beaches in the northern region of the country. This recommendation covers beaches where conditions have been detected that may pose risks to the health of bathers.
Of the 13 affected beaches, 11 have microbiological contamination problems. This type of contamination is generally caused by the presence of bacteria or other microorganisms in the water, which can cause gastrointestinal diseases and other infections in those who come into contact with it.
Despite the warnings issued by the competent authority, many bathers continue to ignore the recommendations and choose to swim at these beaches. This behavior represents a significant risk to public health, especially during the months of highest beach attendance.
