Atlantic depression arrives in the Azores on Friday: these will be the most affected islands

Meteored Portugal2 September 2026 at 16:21

An Atlantic depression is expected to affect the Azores between Friday and Sunday, bringing rain, more intense wind and a worsening of sea conditions. The worsening will begin at the end of Friday afternoon, with the approach of the depression from the west/northwest and the entry of colder and more unstable air at altitude.

This atmospheric configuration should increase instability, favoring showers locally more intense and possibility of thunderstorms, especially between Friday afternoon and Saturday dawn. The Western Group, composed of the islands of Flores and Corvo, will be the first and most affected, with rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and waves close to 5 meters.

The effects will be more marked in the Western and Central groups of the archipelago, while the islands of São Miguel and Santa Maria, in the Eastern Group, will be further away from the most active phase of the depressive system.
