Correio da Manhã2 September 2026 at 07:14

Eleven districts in Portugal will be under yellow warning due to heat on Thursday and Friday. The meteorological warning covers several regions of the country and aims to alert the population to the expected high temperatures.

On Thursday, the rural fire danger will significantly worsen in the interior of the North and Centre, in Alentejo and the Algarve. These regions are considered the most vulnerable to fires during this period of intense heat.

The authorities are warning about the risks associated with meteorological conditions, which favor the spread of rural fires. The current meteorological situation requires special vigilance on the part of the population and civil protection authorities.

A major weather change arrives in Portugal on this date: rain returns with thunderstorms and hail and these are the regions that will be affected

Mainland Portugal will face a significant weather change over the coming days. First, a very hot air mass from North Africa will push temperatures above 40°C on Thursday, September 3rd, especially in the Alentejo region, with some areas reaching 42-43°C. On Friday, the heat begins to decrease in the South but intensifies in the interior North. From Saturday, September 5th, the return of showers, thunderstorms, hail and strong wind gusts is forecast, with greater incidence in the interior of the North and Centre regions, particularly in the areas between Vila Real, Viseu and Guarda. The convective instability results from the combination of hot air at the surface and the arrival of colder air at altitude, which may cause significant lightning discharges. The precipitation distribution will be irregular, with the possibility of heavy intensity in one location and total absence in another.
