The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) placed 11 districts under yellow warning today due to locally heavy rain, hail, thunderstorms and strong wind. The districts covered are Viana do Castelo, Braga, Bragança, Vila Real, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Porto, Aveiro, Leiria and Coimbra.
Specialists from the United States Geological Survey and China identified a glacier collapse as the cause of the catastrophic flooding that hit Nepal, resulting in more than 390 dead. The phenomenon is directly linked to global warming, which significantly increases the risks of natural disasters of this type, highlighting the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation measures against climate change.
After a week marked by rain, showers, thunderstorms and lower temperatures, the weather is expected to improve gradually in mainland Portugal during the next weekend, August 29 and 30, with reduced instability and the return of periods of partly cloudy or clear skies.
Nepalese authorities issued an alert after the formation of a debris lake that blocked a river in the Melamchi region, northeast of Kathmandu.
