The heat will intensify over the coming days in mainland Portugal, after a last week of August marked by lower temperatures and the passage of frontal systems. September begins with a significant change in the weather, with a very hot mass of air of subtropical origin favouring a progressive rise in temperatures. This hot air mass will be responsible for an episode of very high temperatures, particularly in the interior of the country.
According to the information provided, this Tuesday will already be marked by a rise in thermometers in several regions. However, it will be mainly between Wednesday and Thursday that the heat will intensify significantly, culminating in the hottest day of this sequence.
Thursday, 3 September, should be the hottest day, with maximum temperatures of 40°C forecast in some district capitals. The thermal anomalies could reach +11°C above the usual values for this time of year, representing a very sharp rise compared to previous days.
The reference model used for these forecasts is the ECMWF, updated by Meteored, which indicates this sequence of hot days as the main meteorological feature of the beginning of September in mainland Portugal.
