Eleven districts in mainland Portugal will be on Thursday under yellow warning due to hot weather. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) issued this warning due to the forecast of high maximum temperature values.
The yellow warning is the least severe on a three-level scale and indicates a risk situation for certain activities dependent on meteorological conditions. This type of warning does not generally imply major changes in the daily life of the population.
The heat wave affecting mainland Portugal occurs in the context of a warm air mass coming from North Africa, which has affected a large part of the Iberian Peninsula in recent days. Maximum temperatures are expected to significantly exceed normal values for this time of year.
Authorities recommend that the population avoid prolonged sun exposure, stay hydrated frequently, and take special care with vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and people with chronic diseases.
