Associação Zero points out failures in nature restoration in urban areas

Associação Zero identified failures in nature restoration in urban areas. The organization warned of problems in the implementation of ecological restoration measures in urban centers across the country.

The first grants from the Program of Action for Resilience and Nature Restoration in Urban Areas, called Pro nat.urbe, amount to almost eight million euros. These funds are designated for pilot projects of urban ecosystem restoration.

Seven municipalities were selected to receive these grants: Beja, Celorico da Beira, Évora, Guimarães, Leiria, São João da Madeira and Vila Real. These municipalities will develop pilot experiences of ecosystem restoration in their urban areas.

"Invasive Fish in Meimão Reservoir" Discussed Management of Invasive Species

The Meimão bathing area hosted an initiative dedicated to the management of invasive species in the Meimão Reservoir, organized by the LIFE PREDATOR project and the Municipality of Penamacor. The event featured a four-year study on invasive fish, which revealed that 85% of the fish caught in the reservoir are exotic or invasive exotic species, with the wels catfish being the main concern. The study, which involved surveys of around 400 fishermen and partnerships with FCUL and research centers, warned that eradication of the species is impossible, but emphasized the importance of its control. The need for awareness-raising, actions with the school community, and culinary valorization of the catfish was highlighted, with the program ending with a river fish tasting prepared by Chef Rui Cerveira.
