August 2026 was the hottest month ever recorded in the world. This data represents a significant milestone in the history of global climate measurements, surpassing all previous temperature records.

Western Europe was particularly affected by this heatwave, having experienced the hottest summer ever recorded in the region. The extreme temperatures had severe impacts on local populations and ecosystems for several consecutive days.

Global temperatures rose to more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, thus exceeding a critical threshold that scientists have been monitoring with great concern. This excess represents a significant acceleration in the warming of the planet.

A very hot air mass associated with an anticyclone will cause temperatures to rise significantly in mainland Portugal from Thursday onwards, with heat intensifying between Saturday and Monday, September 14, which is expected to be the hottest day of the episode. The most affected regions will be the Tagus Valley, Ribatejo, Centro interior and Alentejo, where thermometers could exceed 38°C, reaching 39°C in Mora and Ponte de Sor. In the Algarve, the sea effect will limit warming on the coast, but in the Algarve interior Alcoutim could reach 36°C. The most intense phase is forecast between September 12 and 15, and the heat could extend until September 16 or 17.

IPMA reduces to three the Algarve municipalities with "maximum" fire danger

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) reduced to three the Algarve municipalities with "maximum" rural fire danger, keeping Loulé, São Brás de Alportel and Tavira at the highest level of risk. With "very high" danger are eight municipalities, including Vila do Bispo, Lagos, Monchique and Portimão, while Aljezur, Lagoa and Albufeira have "elevated" danger and only Faro and Olhão have "moderate" risk. The IPMA calculates these danger levels based on five indicators: air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and precipitation in the previous 24 hours.
