Hotel Cascais Miragem dismisses almost 180 workers after 80 million euro investment

Jornal Económico9 September 2026 at 14:09

The management of Hotel Cascais Miragem initiated a collective dismissal process covering 142 permanent workers and 35 fixed-term contract workers, a total of almost 180 people. The information was communicated on Wednesday, September 9, by the Union of Workers in the Hotel Industry, Tourism, Restaurants, and Similar Industries of the South.

The decision comes following an investment of approximately 80 million euros in the renovation of Hotel Cascais Miragem Health & SPA. The union considers it unacceptable that a project of this magnitude be carried out at the expense of the workers who, for years, ensured the operation and quality of the hotel.

The union and workers presented the management with various proposals and alternatives to avoid or reduce the impact of the collective dismissal, but the management rejected all the solutions presented, deciding to proceed with the dismissals and seeking to impose on the workers and Social Security the costs associated with the renovation works.

The union argues that the collective dismissal lacks legal basis, as the requirements set out in Article 359 of the Labour Code are not met, and that this is a disguised dismissal without just cause. Given this situation, the union calls on the workers covered by the dismissal to legally challenge the dismissals and guarantees full legal support to its members.
