Earthquake of 1.8 felt northeast of Machico

SAPO Notícias5 September 2026 at 11:34

An earthquake of magnitude 1.8 on the Richter scale was felt in the northeast region of Machico, on the island of Madeira. The tremor occurred at a depth of 64 kilometres, according to the information provided about the seismological event.

The Madeira Information and Monitoring Centre confirmed the occurrence of the phenomenon, which was registered by the region's seismological monitoring sensors. The exact location of the epicentre was identified in the northeastern area of the municipality of Machico.

Although it is an earthquake of relatively low magnitude, this type of tremor can be felt by the local population, especially when it occurs at shallower depths. However, earthquakes of this magnitude generally do not cause significant damage to structures.

The Madeira region is occasionally affected by seismological activity due to its geographical location. The regional authorities maintain permanent monitoring systems to detect and evaluate this type of events.

The IPMA issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for five Portuguese districts — Vila Real, Viseu, Bragança, Guarda and Castelo Branco — in effect from 3pm until 9pm today, due to conditions favorable to the occurrence of localized meteorological phenomena. The warning alerts to thunderstorm, locally heavy rainfall with accumulation between 10 to 20 mm in one hour and wind gusts between 70 and 90 km/h. This atmospheric instability affects the North and Center regions, potentially extending to the South, and occurs simultaneously with the 14 districts already under yellow heat warning.
