Heavy rain and "overcast" sky heading to Portugal on this date and this will be the most affected region

The weekend in Portugal begins with unstable meteorological conditions, marked by many clouds, periods of rain and changes in wind direction. The Azores archipelago will be affected on Saturday, September 5th, with precipitation and cloud cover of varying intensities depending on the region.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) predicts that the Central Group of islands, which includes Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial, will be the most affected. Rain will be more persistent throughout the day, with generally very cloudy skies and conditions favorable to the formation of mist or fog that may reduce visibility.

In the Western Group, composed of the islands of Flores and Corvo, showers are expected mainly during the early morning, with clear spells between periods of very cloudy skies. The wind will start to blow from the northwest with moderate intensity, between 20 and 30 km/h, weakening afterwards and gradually rotating to the east.

In the Eastern Group, which covers São Miguel and Santa Maria, the sky will remain very cloudy with temporary clear spells during the afternoon. The forecast points to periods of light rain or drizzle, with southwest wind between 10 and 30 km/h. The fog phenomenon may affect visibility, particularly along the south coast and in higher-altitude areas.

Beyond the heat warnings, IPMA issued thunderstorm warning for 5 districts in effect from 3pm today

The IPMA issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for five Portuguese districts — Vila Real, Viseu, Bragança, Guarda and Castelo Branco — in effect from 3pm until 9pm today, due to conditions favorable to the occurrence of localized meteorological phenomena. The warning alerts to thunderstorm, locally heavy rainfall with accumulation between 10 to 20 mm in one hour and wind gusts between 70 and 90 km/h. This atmospheric instability affects the North and Center regions, potentially extending to the South, and occurs simultaneously with the 14 districts already under yellow heat warning.
