An international team of researchers announced the first successful observation of the effect of gravity on a quantum object in free fall. Unprecedented experiments show Einstein's gravity effects in the quantum world, confirming a prediction made over 100 years ago.
The study was published in the journal Science Advances and demonstrates a link between gravity and the quantum world that Albert Einstein first predicted in 1907. This "happiest thought" of Einstein, as he himself called his theory, refers to understanding how gravity affects objects at the quantum level.
The team emphasizes that the result does not unify quantum mechanics and gravity, nor does it prove that gravity is a quantum phenomenon. In other words, it does not solve the fundamental problem in physics of combining these two theories.
However, the researchers say that the study provides experimental support for the idea that gravity may have measurable effects on quantum objects, opening new possibilities for better understanding the relationship between these two areas of physics.
