The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) extended today the yellow warning for hot weather until Saturday and expanded it from 11 to 14 districts. The districts covered are Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Lisboa, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Coimbra and Portalegre, with the warning in effect between 10:00 today and 19:00 on Saturday. The yellow warning is the least severe of three levels and is issued when there is a risk for activities dependent on the meteorological situation.
Due to intense heat, IPMA placed the municipalities of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo (Guarda), Sardoal and Mação (Santarém), Nisa and Gavião (Portalegre), and Monchique, Portimão, Silves, Loulé, Tavira and São Brás de Alportel (Faro) under maximum danger of rural fire. About 90 municipalities distributed across the districts of Bragança, Guarda, Coimbra, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Portalegre, Setúbal, Évora, Beja and Faro face very high fire danger.
IPMA forecasts for today on the mainland partly cloudy or clear skies, with mist or fog in some locations on the North and Centre coast, light wind, suspended dust and a rise in temperature. Minimum temperatures will range between 14 degrees Celsius in Bragança, Braga and Leiria, and 24 degrees in Portalegre, while maximum temperatures are expected to vary between 27 degrees in Aveiro and 43 degrees in Setúbal and Évora.
