According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the week of September 14 to 20, 2026 will be marked by hot and dry air, with temperatures well above normal for the season. Continental Portugal is facing an intense heat episode with maximum temperatures that could reach 38 ºC, particularly in the interior regions, with thermal anomalies up to 10 ºC above climatological normal. The heat will persist today and tomorrow, affecting both the coast and the interior of the country. This situation is due to the strengthening of an anticyclonic ridge over the Iberian Peninsula, which brings a very hot air mass, with temperatures at around 1500 metres exceeding 20 ºC (reaching 23–24 ºC in the interior). From Tuesday onwards, a change in atmospheric circulation should gradually lower temperatures, bringing some relief.
