Continental Portugal is under the influence of an intense heat episode, with maximum temperatures that could reach 38 ºC, mainly in the interior regions. The expected thermal anomalies may exceed 10 ºC above normal values for this time of year.

The heat will dominate the weather between today and tomorrow, affecting both the coast and the interior of the mainland. This episode is associated with the strengthening of an anticyclonic ridge over the Iberian Peninsula, which favours atmospheric stability and the entry of a very hot air mass.

According to the forecast, at around 1500 metres altitude, temperatures should exceed 20 ºC, potentially reaching 23–24 ºC in the interior. However, from Tuesday onwards, a change in atmospheric circulation should lower temperatures, ending this period of intense heat.

Weather forecast – Week: September 14 to 20, 2026

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the week of September 14 to 20, 2026 will be marked by hot and dry air, with temperatures well above normal for the season. Maximums will exceed 30°C throughout almost the entire territory, with peaks of 35°C on the 14th and 15th, possibly reaching about 40°C in the Tagus valley and Alentejo. Minimums will remain high, above 17°C, with tropical nights between 20 and 25°C in the Central and Southern regions. Wind will be weak, blowing in a moderate nortada regime on the west coast. No precipitation is forecast, although there may be low cloud and fog on the coastal strip between the Mondego River mouth and the Douro River mouth, and possibility of thunderstorms in the interior at the end of the week.
