The Ponta Delgada Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIPD) requested the Competition Authority (AdC) to analyze the competitive conditions on air routes between mainland Portugal and the Azores. The request comes at a time when air fares to the archipelago, in some periods, exceed 500 euros.
The CCIPD wants the Competition Authority to assess whether there are practices that affect free competition in the air sector to the Azores. The business entity argues that the prices charged are too high and that the situation may be related to a lack of competition in the market.
This request is part of a broader context of concern about the air connectivity of the autonomous region, which depends almost exclusively on air transport to connect to the mainland. The situation affects both Azores residents and businesses operating in the region.
