The Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority (ASF) provides a service that allows any interested party to obtain information about life insurance, personal accidents, and capitalization operations associated with a deceased person. The request is made through an official form that must include the personal data of the applicant and the deceased, such as full names, tax identification numbers, dates of birth and death, as well as civil identification documents.
To prove the death, it is necessary to present the original or certified death certificate, the online access code, or a declaration of presumed death. The completed and signed form, accompanied by the required documentation, can be sent by email to [email protected], delivered in person by appointment, or sent by letter to ASF's address in Lisbon. ASF also provides the number 217 983 983 for any questions.
After receiving the request, ASF has a maximum period of 10 working days to issue the certificate with the information available in the central registry. However, the service has limitations: non-contributory group insurance may not be identified, so ASF recommends also contacting the deceased's employer. Additionally, insurance with a duration equal to or less than two months, contracts during free resolution periods, and insurance associated with loans where the capital corresponds to the totality of the debt are excluded by law.
It is important to note that the identification of an insurance through this service does not mean that the applicant is the beneficiary. Confirmation of rights must be requested directly from the insurer, presenting the certificate issued by ASF.
