From Bolsonaro, Hang and even the PCO as targets to the removal of Moraes from the rapporteurship: the timeline of the fake news inquiry

The president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Edson Fachin, removed Minister Alexandre de Moraes from the rapporteurship of the fake news inquiry on Wednesday. The measure was taken in an attempt to circumvent the crisis at the Court given the clash between Moraes and André Mendonça. The inquiry will remain in effect, now under the command of Fachin himself.

Open for seven years, the investigation has been the target of criticism regarding the conduct of the now former rapporteur. Among the targets of the inquiry were former President Jair Bolsonaro, businessman Luciano Hang, and even the PCO party.

The procedure was instituted in March 2019 by the then president of the STF, Dias Toffoli, without a request from the Public Ministry, to investigate attacks on the tribunal. Toffoli handed the rapporteurship to Alexandre de Moraes.

In April 2019, Moraes ordered the removal of news reports from the air, beginning a series of controversial measures that marked the trajectory of the inquiry over the years.
