The president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Edson Fachin, removed Alexandre de Moraes from the fake news inquiry reporting after seven years and is expected to personally take over the investigation's leadership. The measure was taken in an administrative process and establishes that the criminal actions derived from the inquiry continue under Moraes' responsibility, maintaining all acts carried out during the course of the inquiry in force.
The change occurs amid a crisis at the Court aggravated by the revelation that Moraes requested Federal Police reports that cited members of the court. Fachin's decision reinforces the expectation of closure of the inquiry, as he himself had already declared.
The measure is an attempt to circumvent the crisis between ministers Alexandre de Moraes and André Mendonça. Moraes used the fake news inquiry to request an investigation against Mendonça, pointing to partiality in the conduct of the Master case and the INSS case inquiries.
