Less AL, fewer vacant homes and more supply: Brussels creates the Affordable Housing Law in response to the "quite worrying" situation in cities like Lisbon

The European Commission created the Affordable Housing Law in response to the situation described as "quite worrying" in cities like Lisbon, where there are fewer short-term rentals, fewer vacant homes and less housing supply.

This law does not constitute a mandatory imposition for the 27 Member States. MEP Sebastião Bugalho clarified that the legislation aims to "provide rules, legal certainty and instruments to act according to the specificities of each territory".

Brussels will not tell Member States which housing policies they should adopt, leaving the decision on concrete measures to each country.

The text aims to provide a common framework that allows national and local governments to face the specific challenges of the real estate market in their territories.
