Vila Viçosa prepares to host another edition of the Capuchos Festival, one of the most emblematic celebrations of the Alentejo town, known as the "Princess of Alentejo". The festival returns between September 10 and 15, 2026, at Largo dos Capuchos, promising six days of tradition, music and fellowship.
With origins dating back to 1863, the Capuchos Festival has over 160 years of history, keeping alive a tradition that has spanned generations. The festivities are linked to the former Convent of São Francisco dos Capuchos, whose origins date back to 1500 and the House of Bragança, celebrating in honor of Our Lady of Piety and the Lord Jesus of the Afflicted.
The program includes varied concerts, from Zé Pedro Sousa at the opening to Brazilian artist Vítor Kley on Sunday, passing through Badoxa, Chaito & Palosanto and Emanuel. The nighttime entertainment features DJs such as Moreno, Alan Briats, Grouse and Vilas, including an 80s Party on Saturday.
More than a religious festival, the Capuchos represents an important moment of community reunion, marked by the return of emigrants and families to the town. Traditional processions coexist with bull releases, entertainment, a fair and shows, in a combination of religious tradition and popular manifestations that has been maintained for generations.
