A total of 20.4% of students in the final years of elementary and high school say they have already made online bets, according to a survey by the Mixed Parliamentary Front for Education, conducted in partnership with Equidade.info. The survey heard from 1,912 students from 191 schools across the country in the months of August.
The proportion is even higher among students in the 3rd year of high school, reaching almost half of those surveyed, at 49.7%. Another alarming finding is that betting starts at age 11, with at least 9.5% of students in that age group saying they have already bet.
Regarding gender, boys bet more, with 27.8%, compared to 12.6% of girls. In high school, 41.7% of boys have already bet, more than double the rate recorded among middle school students, which was 19%.
In Brazil, it is prohibited for minors to access online betting platforms, which makes the situation even more concerning given the numbers revealed by the survey.
