Peru: archaeologists discover 38 skeletons in ancient citadel

Archaeologists discovered a burial with remains of 38 people at the ancient archaeological site of Chan Chan, located in northern Peru. The discovery also includes gold and copper objects buried alongside the skeletons.

Chan Chan was the capital of the Chimú Empire, one of the most important civilizations of ancient Peru, which flourished before the Inca Empire. The citadel has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986.

The gold and copper objects found suggest that the buried individuals had high social status within Chimú society. The preservation of the remains and artifacts offers researchers new information about the funerary practices and social organization of this people.

This discovery represents one of the largest concentrations of human remains ever found in Chan Chan, contributing significantly to the understanding of Chimú culture and their burial rituals.
