Researchers from the University of Leiria and the University West are developing a biotechnological solution based on sea fennel, a plant that grows on the cliffs of the Peniche region. The main objective of the project is to create natural products for the cosmetic industry, taking advantage of the properties of this plant species.
The initiative arises from the need to reduce dependence on direct collection of this plant from nature, which can contribute to its preservation. Sea fennel, which inhabits the coastal cliffs of the Peniche area, has characteristics that make it interesting for application in cosmetics.
The project represents an innovative approach that combines biotechnology with the valorization of local botanical resources. By developing cultivation or extraction methods in the laboratory, the researchers intend to offer a sustainable alternative to the direct exploitation of natural populations of this plant.
