An iceberg with an area comparable to that of Manhattan, in the United States, broke off from the Petermann glacier on the northwest coast of Greenland on August 4. This event was closely followed by scientists, who monitored its trajectory as the ice block crossed the Petermann Fjord and Nares Strait. The calving of icebergs of this size is a phenomenon that draws scientific attention, especially considering the context of climate change and its impact on Greenland's glaciers. Researchers have been using various observation tools to better understand the behavior of these ice blocks after calving.

The images captured by the Landsat satellites, from NASA and the USGS, revealed a close encounter between the newly formed iceberg and a small rocky outcrop known as Joe Island. This contact was documented through satellite images, allowing scientists to observe in detail what happened when the enormous ice block approached the island.
