The Azores Seismovolcanic Information and Surveillance Centre (CIVISA) today raised the volcanic alert level at Furnas volcano to V1, which corresponds to a volcanic system in a metastable equilibrium phase. The decision was made due to a significant increase in seismic activity in the region.

Since 11:47 local time (which is one hour ahead of Lisbon), there has been an increase in seismic activity at Furnas volcano, located in the municipality of Povoação, on São Miguel island in the Azores.

CIVISA issued a statement informing about this change in the alert level, indicating that all seismic events recorded so far are of unspecified nature in the available portion of the news report.
