The defendant, a 44-year-old man, remained silent during the session at the Judicial Court of Leiria. The man, who is in preventive detention, is accused of 36 qualified scams, one of which in attempted form.
The scams reportedly followed the scheme known as "Hello dad, hello mom", a type of fraud in which criminals contact relatives of victims, usually elderly people, pretending to be children or other family members in an emergency situation.
The trial took place at the Leiria Court, where the defendant chose not to make a statement. The man has been held in preventive detention since his arrest.
