Thursday was the fourth hottest day of September in Portugal in the last 85 years. The information was confirmed by IPMA, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere.

The highest value of maximum air temperature recorded on that day was 44.3°C, measured at the Alcochete meteorological station.

The following day, Friday, the highest value of minimum air temperature was recorded, reaching 28°C, also measured by IPMA in Portalegre.

These data reflect an intense heat wave that affected the country during those days, with temperatures well above the usual average for the month of September.

IPMA places seven districts under yellow warning until 21:00 on Monday

The Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) issued a yellow warning for hot weather for seven districts in mainland Portugal — Beja, Castelo Branco, Évora, Faro, Lisbon, Setúbal and Portalegre — valid until 21:00 on Monday, due to the expected high maximum temperature values. The yellow warning, the least severe on a three-level scale, was also maintained until Saturday for 17 of the 18 mainland districts, with the exception of Viana do Castelo. Additionally, a yellow warning was issued for heavy rainfall and possibility of thunderstorm for the Western group of the Azores, in effect until 09:00.
