September breaks heat record: 4th hottest day in 85 years registered

SOL4 September 2026 at 19:53

Mainland Portugal experienced an extreme heat day in September, which became the fourth hottest day ever recorded in the country in 85 years of measurements. This value represents a significant milestone in the history of Portuguese meteorology, surpassing several previous records for the month.

The highest temperature was recorded in Alcochete, where the thermometer reached 44.3 degrees Celsius. This locality in the district of Setúbal was the hottest point in the country on that day, surpassing temperatures recorded in other regions.

The intense heat affected several regions of mainland Portugal broadly, without being confined to a specific area of the territory. Exceptional temperatures were recorded in various localities across different parts of the country.

This extreme heat episode occurs within a broader trend of rising temperatures in Portugal, particularly in September, which has been breaking historical heat records in recent years.
