The Directorate-General for Health issued a warning for poor air quality in mainland Portugal, caused by the presence of suspended dust from North Africa. The elevated concentration of these particles especially affects the Central and Southern regions of the country.
The phenomenon is expected to continue until Saturday, during which time air quality may pose risks to the population's health. The suspended dust, of Saharan origin, has been crossing the Atlantic and reaching the Iberian Peninsula.
The DGS recommends that the population, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, elderly people, and those with respiratory diseases, take precautions during this period. Measures such as avoiding intense physical exertion outdoors and maintaining good hydration are suggested by health authorities.
This type of African dust transport episode occurs with some frequency, especially under certain meteorological conditions, and can worsen symptoms in people with asthma or other chronic respiratory conditions.
