DGS alerts for poor air quality due to North African dust

Diário de Leiria4 September 2026 at 13:30

The Directorate-General for Health issued an alert due to poor air quality caused by dust from North Africa. These particles are suspended in the atmosphere and mainly affect the Central and Southern regions of the country.

According to the statement, the poor air quality situation is expected to persist until Saturday. The elevated concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 particles poses a risk to the health of the population, especially for vulnerable groups.

The DGS recommends that people with chronic respiratory or heart diseases, elderly individuals, and children minimize exposure to outdoor air during this period. It is also advised to avoid intense physical exertion outdoors.

Health authorities emphasize the importance of following updates on the situation through official information channels.
