The PCP demanded today the completion of the remaining section of the Main Itinerary 2 (IP2) near Évora, considering that this road, whose works stopped in 2011, "cannot continue in abandonment". In a statement, the Regional Organization Directorate of Évora (DOREV) of the PCP states that IP2 is not completed and promises to continue the fight so that it is completed, considering the conclusion of the section abandoned during the Passos Coelho and Portas Government and subsequent governments indispensable.
The communists allude specifically to the section of IP2 between the new Eastern Variant to Évora, inaugurated this morning by the Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Hugo Espírito Santo, and the São Manços Branch, whose works were suspended in 2011 by the then PSD/CDS-PP Government due to the crisis. However, the PCP congratulates itself on the opening to traffic of the new variant, which has been claimed by the populations for years and will allow diverting a relevant part of the traffic from the city.
The Eastern Variant to Évora of IP2 is 12.8 kilometers long and has an expressway profile, meaning dual carriageway in each direction. The variant connects the Eastern Évora Node of Motorway 6 (A6) to National Road 18 (EN18), in the section between the Alentejo city and IP2. Along the route, three interconnections with the existing road network were built and eight overpasses, two of them over railway lines.
The construction works of the variant involved an investment of 54.9 million euros with PRR financing. Construction resumed in November 2024, after being suspended in 2011 due to the crisis.
