Thursday's program (3) brought together specialists with divergent positions to debate mining on indigenous lands, with the objective of offering arguments so that listeners could form their own opinions.
The discussion contrasted the economic potential of mineral exploration and the possibility of income generation for indigenous communities with the need to protect territories, the environment, traditions, and places considered sacred by indigenous peoples.
The Federal Constitution allows research and exploration of mineral resources on indigenous lands, but requires authorization from the National Congress, that affected communities be heard, and that they participate in the results of the activity. Mining on indigenous lands still depends on specific regulation, which has not yet been approved by the legislature. One of the proposals under discussion is Bill 1,331 of 2023, which is being processed in the National Congress.
