There is a rare trio of hurricanes simultaneously crossing the Pacific Ocean. Tropical storm Marie transformed into a hurricane on Wednesday night off the coast of Baja California, following hurricanes Karina and Lowell, both category 4, heading west across the Pacific.
Scientists attribute this phenomenon to waters warmed by a historically strong El Niño. Julia Cole, a climate scientist at the University of Michigan, told the AFP news agency that seeing three hurricanes at the same time is "definitely rare."
According to the expert, the warming caused by El Niño creates favorable conditions for these storms, which are largely fed by warm waters.
