The El Niño phenomenon is rapidly intensifying and could become one of the strongest in the last thousand years, according to a new report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a United Nations body. The agency warned of extreme climate conditions in the coming months and global impacts that are already being felt in various regions of the world.
According to the WMO, El Niño shows persistent positive anomalies in sea surface temperature in the central-eastern equatorial Pacific. Forecasts point to a high probability of continued intensification in the coming months, which concerns the organization's specialists.
This climate phenomenon has the potential to significantly affect weather patterns on a global scale, potentially causing droughts, floods, heat waves and other extreme climate events on different continents. The WMO emphasized the need for preparation and continuous monitoring of atmospheric and oceanic conditions.
