The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere today extended the yellow warning for hot weather until Saturday and expanded it from 11 to 14 districts. The districts covered are Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, and Portalegre, with the warning in effect between 10:00 today and 19:00 on Saturday. The yellow warning is the least severe on a three-level scale and is issued when there is a risk for activities dependent on the meteorological situation.
Due to the intense heat, IPMA placed several municipalities at maximum risk of rural fire, including Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo in Guarda, Sardoal and Mação in Santarém, Nisa and Gavião in Portalegre, and several municipalities in the Algarve. About 90 municipalities in Bragança, Guarda, Coimbra, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Portalegre, Setúbal, Évora, Beja, and Faro face very high fire danger.
For today, IPMA forecasts on the mainland mostly clear or clean skies, mist or fog in some locations on the North and Centre coast, light wind, dust in suspension, and a temperature rise. Minimum temperatures will range from 14 degrees in Bragança, Braga, and Leiria, to 24 degrees in Portalegre, while maximum temperatures should vary between 27 degrees in Aveiro and 43 degrees in Setúbal and Évora.
