A "tongue" of Saharan dust will spread across Portugal from Thursday

A vast plume of dust from the Sahara is approaching mainland Portugal and is expected to reach the country on Thursday, September 3rd. The phenomenon, described as an atmospheric "tongue" of suspended dust, will move at high speed from North Africa to Portuguese territory.

For that day, it is also expected that the warmest period of the week will occur, with high temperatures. The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has already issued a yellow warning precisely due to the forecast of high maximum temperature values.

The synoptic configuration responsible for this phenomenon results from an extensive and robust region of high pressure, manifested in the form of an anticyclonic ridge, extending from the Azores, Madeira and North Africa to the Iberian Peninsula and Central Europe. This atmospheric structure favors the transport of Saharan dust to more northerly latitudes.
