Portugal is one of the European countries with the longest summer school holidays. This reality may change given the growing heat waves affecting the continent.

A UNICEF study estimates that in 2024 heat waves affected the education of more than 900,000 students in Europe. This number reflects the growing impact of extreme temperatures on education systems.

Countries such as France and Belgium have already taken concrete measures, having suspended classes due to extreme heat. These decisions highlight the urgency of adapting school calendars to the new climate conditions.

Several European countries are now considering the possibility of extending summer school holidays in response to heat waves. This measure aims to protect students and ensure better learning conditions.
