India recorded in August the highest average temperature for the month since weather records began in 1901. The country's Meteorological Department reported that the national average reached 28.01°C, which is 0.67°C above the long-term average for August.
The result surpasses the previous record, recorded in 2023, when the national average temperature was 28.0°C. Monsoon rains were 16% below normal during the month, according to the agency.
The smaller amount of rain contributed to the increase in temperatures, in a scenario that was also influenced by El Niño conditions, which is a natural climate phenomenon that causes changes in winds and global climate patterns.
