Chestnut producers in the village of Cova de Lua, in the municipality of Bragança, suffer significant losses due to the destruction of chestnut groves by deer. The animals have caused considerable damage to chestnut tree crops in the region.
The land commission of Cova de Lua took the initiative to request accountability from the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), demanding that the organization intervene in response to the losses caused to local producers.
The situation threatens chestnut production in the village, a product traditionally important for the local economy and for farmers in the Trás-os-Montes region.
After reports of the losses, the possibility arose that deer could be culled as a measure to control the animal population responsible for the damage to the chestnut groves.
