The city of Lagos, in the Algarve, was included by Lonely Planet among the eight best places to visit in the region in an article published for 2026, distinguished as the best choice in the Algarve for dining and nightlife. The international travel publication of Australian origin, written by travel writer Regis St Louis, highlights the restaurants, the buzz after sunset, the beaches and the historical heritage that make Lagos one of the most dynamic destinations in the Algarve.
Lonely Planet considers that Lagos already has much to offer during the day, but it is after sunset that the city finds one of its main differentiating factors. The restaurants spread across the cobblestone streets and more hidden courtyards are highlighted for their fresh fish and seafood, while the buzz continues later in spaces dedicated to craft beer, cocktails and dancing. Tourism of Portugal recalls Lagos's long historical connection to the ocean, visible in the fishing vessels that bring fish to the fish market and in the city's marina.
Although the distinction is centred on gastronomy and nightlife, the publication acknowledges that Lagos has much more to offer. The historical architecture includes Baroque churches, the 17th-century fortress and the ancient walls, elements that preserve Lagos's connection to various periods of Portuguese history. Among the heritage that remains are the Castle of the Governors, the walls and the Fort of Ponta da Bandeira. Praia de Dona Ana is also highlighted as one of the reference spots of the Algarve, in the small coves of the Golden Coast.
Ponta da Piedade is described by the municipality as one of Lagos's gems and one of the most extraordinary scenery in the Algarve. The golden rocks were sculpted by wind and sea over thousands of years, giving rise to caves, small coves and natural formations that can be observed from the walkways or from the sea. It is this proximity between historic centre, beaches and coastal landscape that allows one to find quite different atmospheres throughout the day in the same city.
