The electricity bill skyrocketed in August, registering the most expensive month of the last four years for the regulated tariff paid by eight million households. A combination of negative factors drove this historic rise.
The increase in electricity consumption due to the massive use of air conditioners during heat waves was one of the main culprits. Simultaneously, natural gas suffered a sharp price increase due to the new escalation of the war in the Middle East.
Another determining factor was the end of the tax reductions that the Government had applied to the electricity bill during the previous months to face the international crisis. With the end of these aids, consumers were left more exposed to the price increase.
All these elements caused a strong rise in the wholesale electricity market, significantly worsening the final cost for domestic users.
