Algarve was the region where the most medication was consumed without a medical prescription in 2025

Jornal do Algarve15 September 2026 at 14:47

One third of the resident population in Portugal aged 15 or over consumed non-prescribed medication in 2025, according to data from the 2025 National Health Survey conducted by Statistics Portugal. The percentage stood at 33.2%, a practice more frequent among young people and in the Algarve, which recorded the highest proportion in the country at 38.6%.

Consumption of medication without a prescription was more significant in the population between 15 and 34 years old, with the highest percentage recorded in the 35 to 44 age group, at 40.4%, slightly lower than the percentage of prescribed medication consumption in the same age group, which reached 40.7%.

By regions, the Algarve led with 38.6%, followed by Greater Lisbon with 38% and the Alentejo with 26.2%. Statistics Portugal noted that, despite regional differences, prescribed medication consumption was higher than non-prescribed medication consumption in all regions of the country.

The 2025 NHS was conducted based on a representative sample of 22,000 households spread across the entire national territory.

Why this matters

Algarve readers are directly affected by this data, as the region leads the consumption of medication without prescriptions in Portugal, which may indicate greater access to pharmacies, self-medication or health habits that deserve attention. The article allows comparing the regional situation with other areas of the country and with prescribed medication consumption, informing decisions about personal health and local health policies.

University of Évora creates borderless alliance for culture

The University of Évora is promoting the cross-border alliance "A Fronteira da Cultura" (The Border of Culture), which should bring together about 30 entities and institutions from the Alentejo and Extremadura, with a founding meeting scheduled for the second half of October. The project aims to create a cultural corridor between six cities — Cáceres, Mérida and Badajoz in Extremadura, and Elvas, Estremoz and Évora in the Alentejo — promoting joint projects, greater circulation of artists and researchers, and seeking European funding. The initiative also aims to connect with Évora 2027 and Cáceres 2031's bids for European Capital of Culture, transforming the peripheral position of these regions into an advantage for Iberian cooperation.

Miami-Dade County has opened an international call to select visual artists who may develop public art works at Miami International Airport (MIA), with projects ranging from USD $100 thousand to $500 thousand or more.
