Miami-Dade County has opened an international call to select visual artists who may develop public art works at Miami International Airport (MIA). The initiative is part of the broad airport modernization program and is conducted by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, through the Art in Public Places program, in partnership with the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. The expectation is to initially select approximately 30 to 40 artists, who may compete for specific opportunities over at least two years.
The call is open to professional visual artists, local, national, and international, including artist-led teams. The budgets planned for the works range between USD $100 thousand and USD $500 thousand or more, and should cover all execution costs, including materials, fabrication, transportation, insurance, and installation. The chosen works should contribute to the identity of the new airport spaces and provide artistic experiences for passengers, staff, and visitors.
In the first stage, candidates do not need to develop a specific proposal for the airport. The initial selection functions as an assessment of the qualifications and professional trajectory of the applicants, who must submit images of previously completed works, a resume, and an artistic statement. The selected professionals may later be invited to develop specific proposals for particular spaces, receiving compensation for this development and assistance with travel expenses when necessary.
Registration is free and can be done through the official Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places platform until Monday, September 21, 2026, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time. The initiative reinforces the MIA Galleries program, which since 1996 has promoted exhibitions and artistic installations in the terminal with the goal of transforming the passenger experience and highlighting the cultural and artistic diversity of South Florida.
