University of Évora creates borderless alliance for culture

Alentrium15 September 2026 at 15:33

The University of Évora promotes the cross-border alliance "A Fronteira da Cultura", which should bring together about 30 entities and institutions from the Alentejo and Extremadura in a first phase. The founding meeting is scheduled for the second half of October, marking the formal beginning of the initiative.

The alliance aims to create a cultural corridor between Portugal and Spain, linking six cities: Cáceres, Mérida and Badajoz in Extremadura, and Elvas, Estremoz and Évora in the Alentejo. The project was announced in July by Antonio Sáez Delgado, Vice-Rector for Culture and Society at the University of Évora, during a flamenco performance by the Vargas Family at the Espírito Santo College in Évora.

On 31 August, Antonio Sáez Delgado met with Ignacio Gragera, Mayor of Badajoz, with the Spanish official confirming the municipality's commitment to the initiative. Over twenty entities have already joined, with the number expected to approach 30 in this initial stage.

The project aims to establish a connection between Évora 2027 – European Capital of Culture and the candidacy of Cáceres for European Capital of Culture in 2031. Among the objectives are the creation of common projects, strengthening the circulation of artists and researchers, seeking European funding, and consolidating a shared cultural space between the two countries.

Why this matters

Readers from the Alentejo and Extremadura will be directly affected by this alliance, which could bring more cultural events, opportunities for artists and researchers, and European funding for the region. The project follows the intention announced in July by the University of Évora and the commitment confirmed by the municipality of Badajoz in August, signaling a concrete advance in cross-border cultural cooperation.
