Avenida Niemeyer, which connects the neighborhoods of Leblon and São Conrado in Rio's South Zone, was reopened to traffic around 9:20 AM on Tuesday after being hit by a landslide during the early morning hours. The landslide occurred near Estrada do Vidigal, spreading earth and tree branches across the asphalt.
The road was closed overnight due to the landslide. Teams from Comlurb, Municipal Guard, Geo-Rio, and Fire Department worked at the scene to clear the road.
Initially, the Leblon-bound direction of Niemeyer was reopened to traffic, while the São Conrado lane remained blocked. Because of the closure, drivers faced backups on Avenida Niemeyer.
The congestion caused by the landslide also had effects on the Lagoa-Barra Highway (Autoestrada Engenheiro Fernando Mac Dowell), in the direction of the Zuzu Angel Tunnel, starting from the Fashion Mall.
