On September 11, 1985, the most serious railway accident in Portugal occurred near the Moimenta-Alcafache halt station, in the municipality of Mangualde. The accident happened on the Beira Alta Line, in the late afternoon.

Two trains collided head-on, causing a large-scale fire at the scene of the tragedy. The number of fatalities was significant, deeply marking Portuguese railway history.

This accident continues to be remembered today as one of the greatest railway tragedies that occurred in Portugal, having left an indelible mark on the country's memory.
